CSV Validator for Shopify

Check a product CSV against Shopify's current import format before you import it. The validator reads every row and column, then lists each problem with the row number, the value that caused it and what to do about it. It recognises both the current column names (URL handle, Price) and older ones (Handle, Variant Price).

How to use the csv validator for shopify

  1. Export your products from Shopify, or open the CSV you plan to import.
  2. Drop the file below (or choose it). It is checked on your device and never uploaded.
  3. Review the problems, grouped by type. Errors will block or break the import; warnings are likely to cause trouble.
  4. Download the validation report, or open the repair tool to fix what can be fixed automatically.

What it checks

  • Structure: Header row, separators, encoding, rows with too many or too few values, scattered product rows.
  • Required data: Title on each product's first row, handles for variant rows, Status values when the column is present.
  • Values: Prices, whole-number stock and gram weights, true/false columns, allowed values for Status and inventory policy.
  • Variants: Option names and values, duplicate option combinations, the 3-option limit.
  • Images: Public https:// links, one link per row, file names Shopify rejects.

Example

A variant row that will import with the wrong price:

RowURL handleOption1 valuePrice
2linen-apronRegular$1,299.00
3linen-apronLarge(empty)
Row 2: Price has a currency symbol and a thousands separator (fixable: 1299.00). Row 3: Price is empty, so Shopify would create the variant at 0.00 — CatalogPilot flags it but won't guess a price.

Questions

Is this the same as Shopify's own import check?

No. Shopify only reports problems after you start an import, and its messages can be brief. This validator checks the file beforehand and explains each issue. It follows Shopify's published CSV documentation, but Shopify's importer has the final say — always test-import a few products.

Does it work with files exported from Shopify?

Yes. Exports are a good starting point; the validator will usually find nothing wrong with an untouched export, and will catch problems introduced by editing it in Excel or Google Sheets.

Which Shopify CSV version does it use?

The current product CSV format and official template as published by Shopify (checked on the date shown in the footer of the guides). Older column names are accepted and converted.
