How to use the csv error checker for shopify
- Drop the CSV that failed to import.
- Read the errors, starting from the top. Each one names the row and column.
- Fix them in your spreadsheet, or use the repair tool to fix the ones that can be corrected automatically.
- Check the file again before re-importing.
What it checks
- Blocking errors: Missing titles, option values without option names, duplicate variants, incomplete package dimensions.
- Unreadable values: Prices like “call for price”, stock like “five”, barcodes in scientific notation, spreadsheet errors such as #N/A.
- Broken structure: Unclosed quotes, values shifted into the wrong columns, rows that can't be attached to any product.
- Conflicting columns: Both Barcode and Barcodes columns, the same column twice.

Row 3: Duplicate variant — the option combination “S” is already used on row 2. Each variant needs a unique combination of option values.
Questions
Why does Shopify say my CSV has an invalid format?
Common causes are the file not being UTF-8, semicolons instead of commas (common with European Excel settings), a title row above the header, or both Barcode and Barcodes columns. The checker reports all of these.
Why were some of my variants not imported?
Usually because a variant row has no option value, repeats another variant's option values, or its handle doesn't match the product's first row.
Will fixing the errors guarantee the import works?
No tool can guarantee that — Shopify's importer has rules that aren't fully documented and change over time. Fixing every error here removes the documented causes of failure.
